    Effects of gamma radiation and -20°C temperatures on the shelf life of Hilsa, Tenualosa ilisha (ham.-Buch. 1822)

    The combined effect of radiation and refrigeration on the shelf life of hilsa, Tanualosa ilisha was studied by monitoring the microbiological, chemical and sensory changes of unirradiated and irradiated fish samples using low dose irradiation, doses of 300 krad, 600 krad and 900 krad. Irradiation (900 krad) dramatically reduced population of bacteria, namely total viable counts 48.850cfu per gm for unirradiated, 31.850cfu per gm and 19.600cfu per gm of 300 krad and 600 krad, respectively. The effect was more pronounced at the higher dose (900 krad), total viable count were 14.100cfu per gm. Another microbial indicator total mould counts (TMC) was 8.750cfu per gm, 6.350cfu per gm, and 19.600cfu per gm for 300 krad and 600 krad, respectively. The effect was more pronounced at the higher dose (900 krad) where total viable counts were 14,100cfu per gm. Total volatile nitrogen values increased slowly attaining a value of 101.02mgN per 100gm for unirradiated T. ilisha during refrigerated storage, whereas for irradiated fish, lower values of 71.13, 59.33 and 47.03mgN per 100gm muscle were recorded. Sensory evaluation showed a good correlation with bacterial populations on the basis of overall acceptability scores

    A Magnetic and Moessbauer Spectral Study of Core/Shell Structured Fe/Au Nanoparticles

    Fe/Au nanoparticles have been chemically synthesized through a reverse micelle reaction and investigated by both conventional and synchrotron based x-ray diffraction and by magnetic and Moessbauer spectral studies. The powder x-ray diffraction patterns reveal both the presence of crystalline alpha-iron and gold and the absence of any crystalline iron oxides or other crystalline products. First-order reversal curves, along with the major hysteresis loops of the Fe/Au nanoparticles have been measured as a function of time in order to investigate the evolution of their magnetic properties. The iron-57 Moessbauer spectra of both uncoated iron nanoparticles and the Fe/Au nanoparticles have been measured at 78 and 295 K and indicate that two major iron containing components are present, namely the expected alpha-iron and the unexpected amorphous Fe1-xBx alloy; several poorly crystallized ordered iron(III) oxide components as well as paramagnetic iron(II) and iron(III) components are also observed.     Emergency peripartum hysterectomy in a tertiary hospital in Upper Egypt: six years analysis

    Background: Emergency peripartum hysterectomy (EPH) is often performed for life-threatening obstetric conditions especially when conservative treatment approach fails to stop postpartum hemorrhage. The aim of the study is to detect the incidence, indications, and complications of EPH over 6 years in Assiut Women Health Hospital in Upper Egypt.Methods: A historical cohort study conducted between January 2009 and December 2014. Detailed review of all files of cases of EPH including maternal age, parity, gestational age, type of delivery, indications for EPH and outcome of the hysterectomy.Results: The overall incidence of EPH was 1.30 per 1,000 deliveries. The main indications for hysterectomies were uterine atony 60 (48.78 %), abnormal placentation 27 (21.95 %) and rupture uterus 25 (20.32 %). There were 48 (39.02%) maternal deaths, while the perinatal mortality was 20.32% (25 cases). Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, we found that woman’s age ≥ 40 years and parity ≥ 5 were the most significant independent predictors for maternal mortality in cases of EPH (OR 5.49; 95% CI 2.16 - 13.96) and (OR 0.34; 95% CI 0.15 - 0.77) respectively.Conclusions: The incidence of EPH in Upper Egypt is high. Uterine atony is the major indication for EPH in our hospital. Late referral and delayed decisions to perform hysterectomy contributes in the high mortality rate

    Analysis of final state lepton polarization-dependent observables in H→ℓ+ℓ−γH\to \ell^{+}\ell^{-} \gamma in the SM at loop level

    Recently, the CMS and ATLAS collaborations have announced the results for H→Z[→ℓ+ℓ−]γH\rightarrow Z[\rightarrow \ell^{+}\ell^{-}]\gamma with ℓ=e\ell=e or μ\mu, where H→ZγH\rightarrow Z\gamma is a sub-process of H→ℓ+ℓ−γH\rightarrow \ell^{+} \ell^{-} \gamma. This semi-leptonic Higgs decay receives loop induced resonant H→Z[→ℓ+ℓ−]γH\rightarrow Z[\rightarrow \ell^{+}\ell^{-}]\gamma as well as non-resonant contributions as discussed in. To probe further features coming from these contributions to H→ℓ+ℓ−γH\rightarrow \ell^{+} \ell^{-} \gamma, we suggest that the polarization of the final state lepton is an important parameter. We show that the resonant and non-resonant cross-terms play an important role when the polarization of final state lepton is taken into account, which is negligible in the case of un-polarized leptons. For this purpose, we have calculated the polarized decay rates and the longitudinal, normal and transverse polarization asymmetries. We find that these asymmetries purely come from the loop contributions and are helpful to further investigate the resonant and non-resonant nature of H→Z[→ℓ+ℓ−]γH\rightarrow Z[\rightarrow \ell^{+}\ell^{-}]\gamma decay. We observe that for ℓ=e,μ\ell=e,\mu, the longitudinal decay rate is highly suppressed around mℓℓ≈60m_{\ell\ell}\approx 60GeV when the final lepton spin is −12-\frac{1}{2}, dramatically increasing the corresponding lepton polarization asymmetries. Furthermore, we analyze another clean observable, the ratio of decay rates Γ\Gamma, Rℓℓ′≡ΓH→ℓ+ℓ−γΓH→ℓ′+ℓ′−γR^{\ell\ell'}\equiv \frac{\Gamma_{H\rightarrow \ell^{+} \ell^{-} \gamma}}{\Gamma_{H\rightarrow \ell^{'+} \ell^{'-} \gamma}}, where ℓ\ell and ℓ′\ell' refer to different final state lepton generations. Therefore, the precise measurements of these observables at CMS and ATLAS can provide a fertile ground to test not only the Standard Model (SM) but also to examine the signatures of possible new physics (NP) beyond the SM.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figure

    Computer vision and natural language processing (NLP) are two active machine learning research areas. However, the integration of these two areas gives rise to a new interdisciplinary field, which is currently attracting more attention of researchers. Research has been carried out to extract the text associated with an image or a video that can assist in making computer vision effective. Moreover, researchers focus on utilizing NLP to extract the meaning of words through the use of computer vision. This concept is widely used in robotics. Although robots should observe the surroundings from different ways of interactions, natural gestures and spoken languages are the most convenient way for humans to interact with the robots. This would be possible only if the robots can understand such types of interactions. In the present paper, the proposed integrated application is utilized for guiding vision-impaired people. As vision is the most essential in the life of a human being, an alternative source that helps in guiding the blind in their movements is highly important. For this purpose, the current paper uses a smartphone with the capabilities of vision, language, and intelligence which has been attached to the blind person to capture the images of their surroundings, and it is associated with a Faster Region Convolutional Neural Network (F-RCNN) based central server to detect the objects in the image to inform the person about them and avoid obstacles in their way. These results are passed to the smartphone which produces a speech output for the guidance of the blinds

    Assessment of Ceruloplasmin, Hemopexin, and Haptoglobin in Asthmatic Children

    BACKGROUND: Ceruloplasmin (Cp), haptoglobin, and hemopexin play a role in iron homeostasis and may function to modulate the systemic inflammatory response and be involved in tissue repair. We hypothesized that these proteins could be biological markers for bronchial asthma that reflect the involvement of iron oxidative stress in asthma pathogenesis. AIM: Evaluation of serum levels of proteins involved in iron homeostasis (Cp, hemopexin, and haptoglobin) in asthmatic children and their correlation to pulmonary functions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty moderate to severe persistent asthmatic children aged 6–13 years were included (30 during attacks and 30 in-between attacks). Thirty healthy matched controls were also recruited. All children were subjected to history taking, clinical evaluation and assessment of complete blood picture, serum levels of Cp, haptoglobin, hemopexin, and total IgE. Pulmonary function tests were assessed for all patients. RESULTS: Serum Cp and haptoglobin were significantly elevated in asthmatic children between attacks (448.04 ± 386.79), (993.33 ± 554.56) compared to controls (168.42 ± 13.46), (473.33 ± 350.3), (p = 0.0002, p < 0.0001) and to asthmatics during exacerbations (288.8 ± 219.6), (620 ± 467.86), (p = 0.014, p = 0.006). Serum hemopexin was significantly higher in asthmatics between attacks (509.33 ± 341.51) compared to controls (296.67 ± 158.38) (p < 0.003) but no significant difference compared to acute exacerbations (477.33 ± 396.6). No significant correlations were found between any of the assessed protein levels and pulmonary functions. Hemoglobin concentration was significantly higher among stable asthmatics compared to acute exacerbation and control groups. CONCLUSION: Cp, haptoglobin, and hemopexin can be used as a panel of non-invasive biomarkers that reflect the involvement of iron oxidative stress in asthma pathogenesis

    Efficacy of plant extracts in controlling wheat leaf rust disease caused by Puccinia triticina

    AbstractThe efficacy of eight plant extracts (garlic, clove, garden quinine, Brazilian pepper, anthi mandhaari, black cumin, white cedar and neem) in controlling leaf rust disease of wheat was investigated in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, all treatments inhibited spore germination by more than 93%. Neem extract recorded 98.99% inhibition of spore germination with no significant difference from the fungicide Sumi-8 (100%). Under greenhouse conditions, seed soaking application in neem extract (at concentration of 2ml/L) resulted in 36.82% reduction in the number of pustules/leaf compared with the untreated control. Foliar spraying of plant extracts on wheat seedlings decreased the number of pustules/leaf. Foliar spraying of plant extracts four days after inoculation led to the highest resistance response of wheat plants against leaf rust pathogen. Spray application of wheat seedlings with neem, clove and garden quinine extracts, four days after inoculation with leaf rust pathogen completely prevented rust development (100% disease control) and was comparable with the fungicide Sumi-8. Foliar spray application of wheat plants at mature stage with all plant extracts has significantly reduced the leaf rust infection (average coefficient of infection, ACI) compared with the untreated control and neem was the most effective treatment. This was reflected on grain yield components, whereas the 1000-kernel weight and the test weight were improved whether under one- or two-spray applications, with two-spray application being more effective in this regard. Thus, it could be concluded that plant extracts may be useful to control leaf rust disease in Egypt as a safe alternative option to chemical fungicides

    Serum interferon-alpha level in first degree relatives of systemic lupus erythematosus patients: Correlation with autoantibodies titers

    AbstractBackground and objectivesInterferon-α (IFN-α), a cytokine with both antiviral and immune-regulatory functions, was suggested as a useful tool which can evaluate current systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease activity and identify patients who are at risk of future disease flares. In the current study, serum IFN-α levels and associated demographic, and serological features in Egyptian SLE patients and their first degree relatives (FDRs) in comparison to unrelated healthy controls (UHCs) were examined, in order to identify individuals at the greatest risk for clinical illness.MethodsIn a cross-sectional study, blood samples were drawn from 54 SLE patients, 93 of their FDRs who consented to enroll into the study and 76 UHCs. Measurement of serum IFN-α by a modified ELISA was carried out. Data were analyzed for associations of serum IFN-α levels with autoantibodies titer.ResultsMean serum IFN-α in FDRs was statistically higher than the UHCs and lower than in SLE patients (P<0.0001) and it was correlated with ANA titer (r=0.6, P<0.0001) and anti ds DNA titer (r=0.62, P<0.0001).ConclusionIFN-α is a crucial player in the complicated autoimmune changes that occur in SLE and serum IFN-α can be a useful marker identifying persons who are at risk of future disease development
